2021-22 NBA season predictions: Nets heavy favorites to reach Finals, beat LeBron James' Lakers for title

This season was supposed to be a return to normalcy for the NBA. The schedule is back in its proper place. Teams are playing 82 games again. COVID guidelines have been softened for the majority of the league, thanks to vaccinations. On the surface, it almost looks as though we're about to tip off a traditional season of NBA basketball.

And yet, the championship favorite is without one of its three All-Stars because of a choice that the All-Star has made. The Eastern Conference's reigning No. 1 seed spent the entire offseason in a standoff with one of its cornerstones that failed to produce a trade, and the prohibitive Western Conference favorite cashed in its entire supporting cast for a third All-Star of its own. This is chaos.

The chaos that, amazingly, has become the NBA's norm in recent years. What could be more normal for #ThisLeague than kicking off the 75th anniversary season with league-wide drama and a suddenly wide-open championship race? To help you sort through the madness, our CBS Sports staff has picked everything from conference seeding to the eventual championship winner for the 2021-22 NBA season. Here's how our experts expect this wild season to play out.
If you're late to the team preview party and need to cram before the opening tip, here's a look at all 30 teams' rosters, key offseason moves and biggest questions entering the campaign. If you missed our Top 100 player rankings entering the season, check that out, as well as our awards predictions for the upcoming season.

NFL Players Who Have Lived in Hoboken Jersey City

Football fans  this one s for you! The National Football League is now a few weeks into the 2021 season, and as it s getting into full swing we can think about some of the league s athletes who have connections to Hudson County. There are a ton of current and former players from both Northeast and country wide teams who were born or have lived in Hoboken and Jersey City. Read on to learn more about which players have a history in Hoboken Jersey City.
Robert Ayers started his football tenure at Hoboken High School before moving to South Carolina after his freshman year in 2000. The former defensive end was born in Jersey City in September 1985. After a college career at the University of Tennessee, Robert was drafted 18th overall by the Denver Broncos in 2009 and went on to play nine seasons in the NFL. He spent his first five years in Denver before signing a two year contract with the New York Giants in 2014 and ended his time in the league with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Over the span of his career, Robert recorded 192 solo tackles, 51 tackles for loss, and 108 quarterback hits. He is also one of the few NFL athletes to play with both Peyton Manning and Eli Manning during his career. Robert was released by Tampa Bay in 2018 as well as the Detroit Lions that same year after signing a one year contract with the team and officially retired in July 2019. Currently, Robert is the Defensive Coordinator for Knoxville Catholic High School football in Tennessee.
Linebacker Jonathan Casillas was born in Jersey City but attended North Brunswick High School in Middlesex County before going on to play football at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The undrafted former linebacker played eight seasons in the NFL from 2009 2017, appearing on the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jonathan has two Super Bowl wins to his name: one with New Orleans in 2010 and another with New England in 2015. Over his 102 games, he recorded 263 solo tackles and 122 assists on tackles along with 21 tackles for loss. Jonathan spent three years with the Giants to end his time in the league, recording a career high 96 tackles in the 2016 season while emerging as one of the team s standout players. His tenure in the NFL ended with injuries in 2017.

Washington to retire Sean Taylor's No. 21 jersey, rename road to FedExField in honor of late Pro Bowl safety

Nearly 14 years after he was shot and killed at just 24, former Pro Bowl safety Sean Taylor will be recognized in a historic ceremony ahead of Washington Football Team's Week 6 game against the Chiefs on Sunday. Since its inception in 1932, the franchise has retired just two jersey numbers -- that of Hall of Famers Sammy Baugh and Bobby Mitchell. This weekend, Taylor's famous No. 21 jersey will officially become the third to hang from the rafters, with the late defensive back's family on hand for the tribute.

Nearly 100 team alumni will be honored at FedExField on Sunday, as Washington announced, with Taylor's tribute headlining the day of reflection. Taylor's family will be on the field for a pregame ceremony celebrating the former first-round pick's career, as well as the retirement of his No. 21, which hasn't been issued since his death in 2007.

The team will also commemorate the renaming of the road leading to FedExField as Sean Taylor Road, with both family and friends of Taylor onsite before the game. The first 10,000 fans to enter the stadium Sunday will get commemorative Sean Taylor rally towels, while players and staff will be wearing No. 21 stickers or pins that pay homage to the safety.
"I came into the NFL the same year as Sean Taylor and immediately his athletic ability, resilience, grit, and relentless work ethic set him apart. I and many others looked to him as a role model," Washington team president Jason Wright said in a statement. "The fact that he was tragically taken so early hurt our player community, but also our fans, coaches, and staff. We will continue to remember him and hold him up as an example of professionalism and excellence, and we will all strive to mirror his excellence in our own ways."

Taylor, who was shot and killed during a burglary of his home on Nov. 27, 2007, during his fourth season in the NFL, was posthumously voted a Pro Bowler and All-Pro, as well as inducted into Washington's Ring of Fame, in 2008.

Before his untimely death, the Miami product had established himself as one of the game's top up-and-coming players at his position, as well as one of the NFL's hardest hitters. He missed just two games during his first three seasons, logging a career-high 111 tackles in 2006, and then recorded a career-high five interceptions during his abbreviated nine-game 2007 campaign.

Washington to retire Sean Taylor's No. 21 on Sunday

The Washington Football Team is honoring one of its greatest to ever play the game.

Washington will pay a special tribute to and retire the jersey number worn by the late Sean Taylor during a ceremony this weekend when the Football Team hosts the Kansas City Chiefs at FedExField. The team announced the event Thursday.

Taylor was a tremendous safety, earning two Pro Bowl selections and a second-team All-Pro honor before his life was tragically cut short in November of 2007. Taylor was shot by burglars in a home invasion at his Miami home on Nov. 26, 2007, and died the following day at the age of 24.

Taylor was taking the first steps in a career destined for the Pro Football Hall of Fame when his life was taken from him. Nearly 14 years later, Washington will honor him by making his No. 21 just the third jersey number retired by the franchise.
The timing of the jersey retirement announcement drew criticism Thursday, as it comes just days after the organization was again thrust into the spotlight due to an investigation into the club's operations that included the revelation of a series of emails sent by former Raiders coach Jon Gruden to former Washington team president Bruce Allen. The emails sent by Gruden to Allen and others included the use of racist, homophobic and misogynistic terms and reportedly dated back to 2010, when Gruden was not working for an NFL team. The publication of these emails led to his resignation Monday night.

Washington addressed the timing and short notice of the Taylor announcement -- which will include the club honoring nearly 100 other alumni -- with a statement Thursday.

"We have been planning this weekend's tribute to Sean Taylor since before the start of the season in partnership with Sean Taylor's family and as part of our Alumni weekend activities," the team said. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to rededicate Sean Taylor Road with Sean Taylor's friends, family and team alumni and are excited to officially retire his jersey during the game with our fans and alumni present as part of our Alumni Homecoming Weekend activities. We apologize to fans who would have liked more notice and will continue to share with fans ways we will be celebrating Sean Taylor's legacy over the next month."

Former Sixer Tony Wroten among NBA vets arrested, indicted in fraud scheme

BA Vets Indicted in Alleged Multi-Million-Dollar Health Insurance Fraud Scheme originally appeared on NBC New York. By Jonathan Dienst, Tom Winter, Courtney Copenhagen and John Chandler.N

More than a dozen former NBA players, including Process-era Philadelphia 76ers guard Tony Wroten, have been charged in New York federal court in an alleged multi-million-dollar health insurance fraud scheme to rip off the league's benefit plan, according to an indictment unsealed in the Southern District on Thursday.

The 18 former players named in the indictment include alleged scheme ringleader Terrence Williams, selected 11th overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the then-New Jersey Nets, six-time NBA All-Defensive Team member Tony Allen, former Lakers Guard Shannon Brown and Ronald Glen Davis, who played for the Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Clippers over the course of his career.
Allen's wife, Desiree Allen, is the only woman charged in the indictment.

Those indicted face charges of conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud as well as aggravated identity theft. By late morning, 16 of them were in custody after arrests in a dozen locations nationwide. The FBI said "this remains an ongoing investigation," though it was not clear if more arrests were expected.

According to the grand jury indictment, the defendants allegedly engaged in a widespread scheme from at least 2017 up to around 2020 to defraud the NBA Players' Health and Welfare Benefit Plan by submitting fake reimbursement claims for medical and dental services that were never actually rendered.

New Jersey Devils Final Preseason Game Cancelled due to Partial Power Outage at Prudential Center

I had the fortune of going to tonight s preseason game between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders. I did not know what to expect, but I was hoping for a good performance and no injuries. What I got was darkness. Partially, at least.

As I headed into the arena, all was fine until I got closer to Section 1. It was dark. The ambient lighting was enough to get around, but the normal lighting was off. It was off over those sections and pretty much the entire lower bowl in that end of the arena. The humongous scoreboard was off. Most importantly, about half of the rink lights were off. While one could see the rink, it could cause issues for those playing the game. That was enough to delay the game in the hopes of repairing it.

As such, the game that was scheduled for 7 PM and normally would start at 7:08 PM did not happen at that time. Around 7:15 PM, the Public Address announcer stated that the game would be delayed due to an outage and staff were working on the issue. Music continued to play in the arena. Fans milled about. At one point, a number turned on the flashlights on their smartphones and waved them about. At another point, a wave started. The delay continued until about 7:50 PM. Then, the announcement came: the game would be cancelled and would not be re scheduled.
This was received negatively by those in attendance and understandably so. It may have been an exhibition game, but it was a game nonetheless. A time out to see Our Favorite Team play the Isles (except for the Isles fans who were to support the visitors). The announcement and subsequent statement sent out by the team (the e mail matched the wording on the site) stated that those in attendance would be eligible for a 2021 22 regular season game for the same number of tickets they had tonight. Details would come out on how that will be done later. That is a fair level of compensation. With no game played tonight, you get tickets to another game that will be played. A game with some value, too. Hopefully all who get this option will be able to pick a game they can attend instead of being forced to pick between some non ideal match ups they may not be able to attend.

The odd thing about it was that this was really a partial power outage. The lounge sections had power. The upper bowl had power throughout. The other half of the rink had full power. The sound system was clearly working. This was not a situation like what happened on January 9, 2010 when the power in the whole arena went out during a game between the New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning. ( Fun  fact: I attended that game too.) Still, the main issue is safety. Even having half of the rink lights out could lead to issues for the players on the ice. We would not want to see injuries normally, especially in preseason games. We especially would not like a Devil getting hurt because they did not see something as clearly as they would have under normal lighting conditions. Between that, it being a preseason game, and the seemingly unknown lead time to fix the issue (no progress was seemingly made from what I saw), I can understand the decision to cancel the game. I am a little disappointed by it, but it is what it is.

Check Out The Photo Of An NBA All-Star At The Colts And Dolphins Game On Sunday Holding A Dolphins Jersey

Former Indiana Pacers and current Miami Heat star Victor Oladipo was at the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts game in Florida on Sunday.
The Indianapolis Colts were on the road to face the Miami Dolphins in Florida on Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium.

Ironically, Victor Oladipo, who was a two-time All-Star with the Indiana Pacers, is now on the Miami Heat and was at the game on Sunday.

A photo of the former Pacers and current Heat star at the game can be seen in the Tweet that is embedded below from Charlie Clifford of WISH-TV.
Unfortunately for Indiana sports fans, their former star was seen holding a Dolphins jersey and not a Colts jersey.

Oladipo was not only a star (nearly a superstar) when he played for the Pacers, but he also was one of the best players to play at Indiana University over the last 20 years.

After playing three seasons for Tom Crean's Hoosiers in Bloomington, Indiana, the shooting guard was selected number two overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic.

During his junior season, he averaged 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

He also shot nearly 60% from the field, and over 44% from the three-point range.

He is entering his ninth season in the NBA and has played for the Magic, Oklahoma City Thunder, Pacers, Houston Rockets and Heat.
Last season he averaged 19.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, while playing for the Pacers, Rockets and Heat.

He was involved in the James Harden trade and got sent to the Rockets, and after a short stint in Houston was then sent to Miami.

The best years of his NBA career were when he played for the Pacers.

The Colts beat the Dolphins 27-17 for their first win of the 2021-22 NFL season.

Pau Gasol Announces Retirement Lakers Will Retire No. 16 Jersey

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA)  Six time NBA All Star Pau Gasol announced his retirement from professional basketball on Tuesday in a press conference at an opera house in Barcelona. Gasol won back to back championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010 as well as a gold medal with Spain s national team in the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
Pau Gasol is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished players of his generation. A two time NBA champion six time NBA All Star three time Olympic medalist and world champion Pau inspired countless fans through his remarkable skill and passion for the game,  said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in a statement posted on Twitter.  But what sets Pau apart is his tireless commitment to giving back to his native Spain and other communities around the world which he continues to make a priority. We congratulate Pau on an outstanding career and thank him for being such a dedicated ambassador for our league.

Gasol was traded to the Lakers in February 2008 and made an immediate impact helping the Lakers reach three consecutive NBA Finals.

Pau Gasol brought hope and talent to the Lakers,  former coach Phil Jackson said in a statement to ESPN s Ramona Shelburne.  The effect was immediate. His game put LA back into championship contention. He was also a gentleman and generous hero.

Gasol formed a special relationship with Kobe Bryant who had previously struggled to get along with his former superstar teammate Shaquille O Neal.
I want to make a special mention to Kobe Bryant. I d very much like him to be here but that s life,  said Gasol during his retirement press conference.  He taught me how to be a better leader better competitor what it mean to be a winner.

Gasol spoke about their close friendship following Bryant and his daughter Gianna s tragic death in January 2020.
I miss you hermano not a day goes by that you are not present in what I do,  said Gasol.  Your spirit your drive your ambition your love continues to shine in my life and in many others.

Gasol 41 announced his retirement from international basketball in August after Spain lost to the United States in the quarterfinals at the Olympics. He rejoined Barcelona the club he played for as a teenager before being selected No. 3 overall in the 2001 NBA draft in February after not playing for nearly two years because of a  left foot stress fracture.

I m going to retire from professional basketball,  Gasol said.  It s a difficult decision after so many years but it s a decision that I really thought over.

Gasol is one of just four players in NBA history with more than 20,000 points 11,000 rebounds 3,500 assists and 1,500 blocks along with Kareem Abdul Jabbar Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett.

The Green Bay Packers added a pocket to Aaron Jones' jersey so he can play while carrying his father's ashes

(CNN)Aaron Jones of the Green Bay Packers received a heartwarming gesture from his team after losing a pendant containing his father's ashes during a game.

After the black pendant was found, Red Batty, the team's equipment manager, built a small pocket onto Jones' jersey, perfectly measured to securely hold the pendant, the Green Bay Packers said on Twitter Sunday.
"I can just drop it in there and I don't have to worry about it falling out, so I can play with it," Jones said during a press conference Friday, confirming he wore the jersey with the pendent during the Packers' last game against the San Francisco 49ers on September 26.
Jones' father, Alvin Jones Sr., passed away in April from Covid-19 complications, KTSM producer Andra Litton confirmed on Twitter.
The Packers' running back initially wore the football-shaped pendant on a chain, but lost it in the end zone during one of his touchdowns in a game against the Detroit Lions on September 20. Team trainer Bryan "Flea" Engel found the pendant, Jones tweeted, along with a photo of the pendant.
Jones added he is looking to get a new chain for the pendant, so he can keep it on him nearly "at all times," but for now, he wears it on game days.
"It's something I'll continue to do," Jones said. "Just keep my dad with me everywhere I go."
The athlete was very close to his father, who didn't miss any of his son's' games in nine years, Jones said in an Instagram tribute to his dad following his death.
The athlete was featured during an episode of The Adam Schefter podcast, that will air next week, in which he spoke on the significance of the gesture from his team, ESPN reported.
"It just shows how special our staff is, and our support staff here with the Packers in Green Bay from the training staff to our equipment staff to [the] coaching staff to [the] GM," Jones said during the episode.
"Just the whole time I've been experiencing this and dealing with this, they've been there for me, from the funeral to this."

New Jersey Devils Cut Four More from Camp; Claimed Mason Geertsen from Waivers

The New Jersey Devils cut four more players from camp today: Chase Stillman, Nate Schnarr, Robbie Russo, and Brian Flynn. The Devils also claimed Mason Geertsen, a large minor league skater from waivers.
The New Jersey Devils announced four more cuts from their training camp roster this afternoon. According to the team s official website, they are Chase Stillman, Robbie Russo, Nate Schnarr, and Brian Flynn. Stillman is being re assigned to his major junior team, the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League. Russo and Flynn have been placed on waivers; should they clear them, then they will be assigned to Utica. Schnarr has been directly demoted to the Utica Comets.

This announcement is not a big surprise. While all four played in a preseason game in this past week, neither of them had made a significant impact or had any large expectation of making the team. Flynn and Russo were signed primarily for Utica and Schnarr has yet to impress enough at the AHL to warrant a look at the NHL level. I would expect Flynn and Russo to clear waivers unless someone in another organization really likes them. As for Stillman, he needs experience. He was just drafted after a season of only eight season games in a Danish U 20 league and a World U 18 Championship appearance. It makes sense for him and his development to go back to Sudbury and hopefully emerge as one of the OHL s better forwards.

However, the Devils did not go from 46 to 42 today as they made an addition. The team claimed defenseman Mason Geertsen from waivers this afternoon. (UPDATE: Per a reader by an email, Geertsen has been converted to a forward in recent seasons. This post has been corrected accordingly) The words  size  and  toughness  were used in the subheadline of the team s announcement on their website, which should give you a good indication as to why he was claimed. Unless you follow the AHL or Vancouver and Edmonton of the WHL, then you may not know who Geertsen is. Per EliteProspects, he is a 26 year old left shooting defenseman (now forward) listed at 6 4  and 216 pounds. He was drafted by Colorado in the fourth round back in 2013. He did get an ELC with Colorado in 2015, where in he spent his entire time in either the AHL or ECHL racking up PIMs and very few points. Avalanche management did give him a second, one season deal in 2018. In 2019, Hartford   the AHL affiliate of Our Hated Rivals   signed him to a deal. Our Hated Rivals retained him and he has remained there up until this day where the Devils claimed him off waivers.

I would not expect to see him in Newark. Geertsen has played in zero NHL games in his career. He never got a shot with Colorado or Our Hated Rivals since turning pro in 2015. In his 297 AHL games, Geertsen has put up nine goals, 41 assists, and 519 PIM. From where I stand, this is more or less an acquisition for Utica. Whether it is a good one remains to be seen as there is no shortage of defensemen (or wingers) in the organization between the Devils and Comets. Still, he is an addition and so I wish him the best.

What do you think of the cuts the Devils made today? Will we see more of them made tomorrow? What do you think of the acquisition of Geertsen? Please leave your answers and other thoughts about these moves in the comments. Thank you for reading.

LEAKED: ADIDAS REVEAL ARSENAL THROWBACK LOOK WITH 202122 TEAMGEIST KIT

Arsenal have 202122 Teamgeist kit revealed
German apparel juggernaut Adidas have turned the clock back fifteen years, after their latest design was revealed thanks to Footy Headlines; a Teamgeist kit for Premier League outfit Arsenal for the 202122 season:
Expected to release in November, the layout of the design resembles the Teimgeist official match ball for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, with the curved stripes seen under each arm a direct representation of the memorable ball pattern.

Unlike other kits released this season from both Adidas and Nike that have been far more intricate, this effort not only draws inspiration from the match ball, but the Teamgeist kits themselves from the same tournament. Bayern Munich have already teased their official kit for the 2022 season in the same layout, as Adidas could be using this template across many of its current kit deals.

Invoking yesteryear through a shirt
Most importantly, the feeling any Arsenal fan will get when seeing the leaked images above instantly teleports them back to 200506, when the Gunners were embarking on their final season at Highbury before switching house to the Emirates.
Arsenal s Robert Pires tries to pass the ball to Thierry Henry from the penalty spot (Photo by Jon Buckle PA Images via Getty Images)

O2 was the main short sponsor, Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp, and Cesc Fabregas were all still adored beyond measure, and the club was amongst the elite in the European game, reaching the final of the Champions League.

It may seem silly to some, but during frustrating times like these for a club that has fallen well adrift of where many feel it has the right to belong, any connection to happier times of the past will undoubtedly go over incredibly well with a fanbase that is increasingly disconnected in many respects.

Adidas will likely have a fanfavorite with this one.

Brad Weber wins starting jersey for Bledisloe III

Brad Weber has been named as Aaron Smith s replacement, leap frogging TJ Perenara for the starting position in the third Bledisloe Test in Perth on Sunday afternoon.

Billed as a Father s Day clash, the All Blacks will be without three of their stars with Smith, Richie Mo unga and Sam Whitelock all remaining in New Zealand with their partners expecting babies.

Weber will get his second start at half back in his 11th Test, with Perenara to provide impact off the bench, while Beauden Barrett has been given the nod to start at fly half as Mo unga s replacement.
Brad has been with us through the Steinlager Series and coming into the Rugby Championship,  All Blacks coach Ian Foster said.  We really wanted to build the nine combination, especially with Aaron not here and to complement TJ s leadership and experience, so this is a great opportunity to put our faith in Brad to start the Test.

In all, Foster has made six changes to his side with Scott Barrett coming in for Whitelock in the only change up front, while Anton Leinert Brown will make his return from injury slotting in at centre joining David Havili. Reiko Ioane has been moved to the left wing, with Will Jordan taking up the right and Jordie Barrett slots in at fullback, leaving Damian McKenzie and George Bridge on the bench as powerful replacements.
Having already won the Bledisloe Cup for a 19th straight year, the All Blacks will be looking to complete the whitewash. While the Wallabies were able to stay in touch in the opening Test, falling 33 25, New Zealand came out firing in the second Test in Auckland, registering a record 57 22 win, and they ll be determined to round out the series with another strong win.

Despite the unusual circumstances around the final Test, with the match delayed, quarantine in New Zealand and Perth, Foster believes his team won t be underdone.
We are ready, and the team is really determined to finish off this block of Tests against Australia with a top performance. We ve had a really unique situation going into this Test, with quarantine back in New Zealand and a  soft  quarantine here in Perth, but the work that has gone in preparing the players has been outstanding, so when the whistle goes on Sunday, we ll be ready.

Foster has also been forced to make changes on his bench with Patrick Tuipulotu out with a tight groin which sees Tupou Vaa i come onto the bench for his first Test of 2021. While Ethan Blackadder also gets the call up as loose forward cover. Ardie Savea will captain the All Blacks for the first time at number eight.

In the forwards, we have picked a group that is most recently battle hardened,  Foster added.  A lot of them played in the first two Bledisloe Cup Tests, so it s right to go with them in this Fortinet Rugby Championship Test.
All Blacks: Jordie Barrett, Will Jordan, Anton Lienert Brown, David Havili, Rieko Ioane, Beauden Barrett, Brad Webber, Ardie Savea, Dalton Papalii, Akira Ioane, Scott Barrett, Brodie Retallick, Nepo Laulala, Codie Taylor, George Bower. Replacements: Samisoni Taukei aho, Karl Tu inukuafe, Angus Ta avao, Tupou Vaa I, Ethan Blackadder, TJ Perenara, Damian McKenzie, George Bridge.

Fanatics releases top selling NFL jerseys ahead of Week 1: How to buy your own

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has the top selling jersey in the NFL from August through the first week of September, Fanatics announced.screenshot from Fanatics
By Brian Fonseca | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
With the opening week of the 2021 NFL season kicking off on Thursday night between Tom Brady s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dak Prescott s Dallas Cowboys, Fanatics publicized the most popular jerseys among the league leading up to it.

Fanatics, the NFL s official e commerce partner, released the top five selling NFL jerseys from August 1st through September 8, and one of them is playing on Thursday.
A lingering COVID 19 issue with the Dallas Cowboys is likely to keep one of their best players out of the opener at Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay.

Four time All Pro right guard Zack Martin is among the latest Dallas players to test positive. Asked if he would miss Thursday s matchup with seven time champion quarterback Tom Brady, coach Mike McCarthy said,  I would say so, yes.

Four other potential starters were in the health and safety protocols late in the preseason but have since returned: receiver CeeDee Lamb, left guard Connor Williams, safety Damontae Kazee and defensive tackle Carlos Watkins.

Backup tackle Brandon Knight was placed on the COVID 19 reserve list along with Martin. Receiver Noah Brown was already on it.

The outbreak started with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn before the second to last preseason game against Houston. Quinn is back also.

Third year pro Connor McGovern, who filled in for Martin when he was sidelined by a calf injury last year, is set to replace him again.
McCarthy said the club held virtual meetings Sunday morning before the players came in for practice. They were set to go back to virtual meetings after practice. McCarthy said they would follow the same procedure Monday, the most important practice before the opener.

The numbers are up in our society so I think we understand what we need to do and I think we re more rehearsed in the protocols and the adjustments,  McCarthy said.  We re still going to get our work done.

With Martin likely out, the Cowboys will again be without one of their top three offensive linemen after the trio never played together in 2020.

Martin was limited to 10 games with a calf issue, and seven time Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith played in just two games before season ending neck surgery. A hip problem that required surgery kept right tackle La el Collins out all season.

Lamb said he lost his sense of taste and smell for about a week, but he doesn t have any concerns about his conditioning going into the game against the Buccaneers.
It s definitely a tough situation that we re going through and that we re battling,  Lamb said.  It s kind of unfortunate on our end just considering we re doing everything right and not really understanding where it s coming from. At this point, we ve just got to play it safe.

NFL jersey number rules, explained: Why these players changed numbers for 2021 season

Football is a game of inches   and numbers.

If youre an NFL fan, you might notice something looks a bit off when youre watching games this season: Receivers with single-digit numbers, running backs with numbers in the 80s, tight ends with numbers in the teens.
Your eyes dont deceive you: These are all legitimate numbers now for wide receivers, tight ends and backs, with the NFL relaxing the rules on which position groups can wear certain numbers moving forward. While it can be a bit discombobulating to watch, the reasoning behind the NFLs first major number rules change since the 1970s is actually a pretty good one.

Heres what you need to know about the NFLs changes for the 2021 season:
What is the new NFL number rule?
For the 2021 NFL season, several position groups   namely wide receivers, tight ends, running backs   are getting fresh number brackets, meaning number options for an individual player have nearly tripled.

Previously, only quarterbacks, punters and kickers could have single digit uniform numbers. Now, that group has been expanded to include tight ends, wide receivers, running backs and defensive backs.
Why did the NFL change jersey numbers?
There are a few reasons why the NFL decided to change the jersey mumber rules. The chief reason, though, comes from the team in Kansas City.

The sheer size of rosters (53 players in total, plus practice squad players) can make it difficult for teams to assign numbers to certain position groups, especially for teams which have more than a few retired numbers.

The Chiefs, who proposed the rule change, have four numbers retired in the 20-49 number range: That number grouping previously was reserved for running backs, linebackers and defensive backs.

With COVID-19 changing roster rules in 2020 to include expanded practice squad rosters, the limitations on number assignments caused an issue for the Chiefs and several other teams in the NFL, leading to the proposal, which owners approved earlier in 2021.
With the number brackets relaxed and expanded, it opens up several more position groups outside of QB, punter and kicker to have single-digit numbers: Wide receivers, running backs and tight ends have greatly expanded number options moving forward. The offensive and defensive lines, though, wont get any changes. Same goes for punters, kickers and quarterbacks.

The number change hasnt been accepted by all: In fact, Tom Brady has been one of the more vocal critics of the rule. Brady   whether hes just trolling in his old age or he legitimately does not like the rule change   thinks the rule could complicate matters for offenses.
How much does it cost to change an NFL jersey number?
Just as one simply does not walk into Mordor, an NFL player simply does not change his number. The price to for an NFL player to change his number is pretty hefty   depending on the player.

In order for an NFL player to change his number for the upcoming season, he must buy out the existing inventory of retail-ready NFL jerseys; Meaning, any jersey ready to be sold at a Dicks Sporting Goods or Nike Store has to be purchased by the player.

Dalvin Cook, who wanted to change his number for the upcoming NFL season, was tasked to pay $1.5 million, the price of the remaining in-stock jerseys across the country. That number deterred Cook from wanting to change from his No. 33, but hes expected to change for the 2022 NFL season.
If a player wants to change his number for a following season, with proper notification to the NFL, he can change his number without issue.
